This is a common question. I’ve heard it asked by people who don’t like the brownie but they have never tried to make it themselves. The problem is that there are a lot of variables that can affect the brownie to make it just right. For example, I tend to cut the brownies about a third of the way through so that they have a crispy outer layer and a tender inner layer.
The ideal brownie (in my opinion) is one with a crisp, golden, crunchy, and chewy outer layer and a soft, chewy, flaky, and creamy, soft and gooey inner layer. I usually cut mine a quarter the way through so that it’s a little less dense than a cheesecake brownie but still well worth the effort.
I know that brownies were one of the most popular desserts that came out of the 1950s and ’60s, but I would still argue that they are no longer the most popular brownie. This is because the amount of time it takes to make a brownie has grown so big that brownies now take longer to cook and are very much worth waiting for and waiting for that to happen. This is especially true if you want your brownies to be as good as the originals were.
