Tanjung

CookingCompanionsTravel

The large town of Tanjung is the administrative capital for North Lombok. The area is strongly dominated by the majesty of Mt Rinjani and the surrounding mountain ranges, offering stunning landscapes for travelers who like to go “off the beaten path”. The many waterfalls and rivers, jungle and rainforest with towering old-growth tress, as well as the unique flora and fauna of the region and the long curves of deserted beaches make the north coast an ideal destination for those who appreciate true natural beauty. And Tanjung is just the perfect quiet spot to get out there and explore what the north has to offer. Furthermore you will be super close to the Gili islands and Bangsal harbor is only a 20 min ride away, giving you easy access to this island paradise.

How to get there?

Once you reached Lombok by boat or airplane Tanjung can best be reached by taking a Blue Bird Taxi or shuttle bus offered by one of the tourist agencies.

Highlights

Close to Tanjung you will find the village of Senaru nestled on the northern foothills of Lombok’s magnificent volcano and surrounded by the natural beauty of the Rinjani National Park. It is so worth taking a day trip up here and again we recommend to just hire a scooter and go for it. You will be rewarded with glorious views of the mountains and the valleys below. On top the Sedang Gile and Tiu Kelep waterfalls are easily reached from Senaru. And of course you can also spend some time trekking through the jungles and visit some remote traditional villages. Note that if you visit the waterfalls you most probably will be offered to take a guide (they told us foreigners are not allowed to hike to the waterfalls without a guide), but you do not really need one. The path is quite good and you will easily know where to go. Bring shoes that are also good in water as you might have to pass a river twice.

How long to stay?

As Tanjung is the perfect place to explore the Rinjani National Park and the perfect base to start a trip to the Gili islands most travelers only stay for 1-2 nights. We decided to go for two nights so we could hike to the Sedang Gile and Tiu Kelep waterfalls and leave for the Gilis the next day. Otherwise the village itself does not offer much. There are a couple of restaurants and shops located along the main street and a couple of nice beaches can be found along the coast.

Where to stay?

We stayed in the Mina Tanjung Hotel for 20 EUR per night/double room. The rooms are nicely furnished, spacious and clean. They also have good TV, aircon and a super big and comfy bathroom with a nice hot shower. The hotel is located directly at the beach and also has a good pool. For us the breakfast was included and we really enjoyed having the option to choose Western or Indonesian dishes for breakfast. The portions are huge! The restaurant also serves lunch and dinner – which you can order to your room until 11 pm. The hotel staff is friendly and will rent scooters to you or help you to organize your further travels.
