This is a great technique for getting charcoal to a high temperature and for it to be evenly lit. You can use cooking oil or gasoline for this. First, heat a clean, glass bowl or measuring cup to a medium to high temperature. Pour the cooking oil, not the oil you’re using, into the bowl. Do not add more oil or you’ll scorch the charcoal. Once the oil is hot enough, pour a few drops of the charcoal fluid into the oil.
Once the charcoal fluid is in the oil, add more charcoal fluid to the bowl, and stir it. Continue adding charcoal fluid until the charcoal is evenly lit. Then add more charcoal fluid and stir. Continue adding charcoal fluid until you have a full layer of charcoal and your bowl is as hot as desired. (This technique can take up to about an hour.
This really works. I’ve done it at the stove, in one of my cooking classes, and in my own cooking, but I’ve never tried it with charcoal.
I’ve been really disappointed with my charcoal Ive had for years. Its light is too dim for me to cook with. The only thing keeping me from turning it into a stove-top replacement is the fact that some charcoal is very heavy. So I’ve resorted to using my kitchen faucets to light my charcoal, which works just fine. The only thing I wish I could do is buy some lighter fluid that would help me cook with charcoal easier.
With that said, there are many ways to light charcoal without using any burning fuel. One way is by simply placing some cooking oil on your stove and then lighting it by placing some paper or string over a gas flame. There are also ways to do this with a blowtorch, but I’ve never tried that.
I’ll take the blowtorch approach any day over the paper approach. This is because the paper works for me and I’m not as scared of the fumes as I used to be. That being said, it doesn’t feel so much like the kitchen faucet for me anymore.
I know that this is a controversial subject, but the question is, which one is the lightest? That is, which one burns in the lightest way? The paper is lighter, but it looks like cotton candy on fire. The blowtorch gets the best of both worlds, but it looks like a real kitchen. You can also experiment with a lighter-burning lighter, but you then need to light it in the oven, which I dont think is a good idea.

It was very hard to find a source for this tip. I mean, it’s not like I’ve ever used baking soda or vinegar, or even salt water, but maybe I’ll get around to it.
Another way to look at it is that some of the lighter bulbs are simply too light. If you have a large bulb and you want to get a light to light it, you should use a light bulb that’s quite bright because that light will really shine and really light your home.
