Our family tradition is spending our holidays baking (mostly) at home and eating a variety of delicious food. Our family of four is often up late at night and our kids are usually asleep or in bed before 7:30 AM. There is always some leftover and no one wants to share it with the rest of the family. This year, we decided to bake at home because we had it up 2.5 hours earlier and it was the last night before the kids would be up to play.
We have always been that way. Our oldest has been baking during the day since they were tiny, and our next-oldest loves the act of it and it’s the only time of day she gets to spend playing with the kids on the couch. We have always baked at home, but this year we decided to do it at home since we had the kids upstairs watching a Christmas movie and wouldn’t be tempted to go downstairs to get the cookies.
We were also quite worried about the time we would have to set it up, and we went for it anyway. We had already prepped the cookie tray, made the cookie dough, and the cookie cutters. I got them all the different cookie cutters so I could have the colors just about right. The cookies were still in the oven when I got home, so I had time to bake all the cookies. I just had to bake them until they were golden brown.
So I can’t resist the temptation to make a little video of the baking. It was nice to see our boys doing something they enjoy, even if it’s a little bit different from what we all prefer.
I’m not sure if I’ve ever baked a cookie before. I’m pretty sure I’ve baked cookies, but I don’t usually do them with the baking pan and the cookies that are in it. I’m sure there are some things I don’t remember making because I’m too busy baking. It’s been a while since I’ve had a cookie like this.
Christmas baking is not unusual. And in fact, it’s a tradition that the entire family shares. But in the last few years Ive noticed that many of our friends dont bake too often. It can be a lot of work, especially since there are so many cookies to be made.
I can’t remember the last time I baked as much as we did on Christmas, but my grandmother and aunt did it every year. And I only remember it because I was young and didn’t think about it. I don’t remember it because I was too busy baking.
Christmas baking is a great opportunity to spend time with family, not because we’re all baking the same cookies, but because we can all share in the excitement of creating a yummy treat for friends, neighbors, or strangers that have come to visit. One of my favorite cookies ever is the gingerbread man cookies. The gingerbread man has a red nose, a Santa hat, and a red nose, but I just love the gingerbread man himself.
This year I’m going to be spending a little more time with my family, and making even more cookies. I’m hoping to find a new recipe for gingerbread man cookies.
